The Girl & The Time Lapse

Time slowed down in 2020. Seasons rolled as usual and yet they were different – they often  felt black and grey when I was seeking color. The pandemic showed me parts of myself that I had never seen before . The slowing down also helped me learn that we are so deeply affected by each season and even our own breath if we pay attention to it. I saw me impacted in very strange ways by every large and little change that occurred around me.

The lockdown , the anxiety, the news , those empty streets, life and death conversations , uncertainty, shifting frameworks , sudden priorities , anchors held within, deeply held beliefs, values, desires, my ideas of femininity , aesthetic , lifestyle … almost everything felt a stir . This very long recess made me pause , reflect , and question life itself. It made me stare at hidden contours ,examine myself vis a vis the much talked about new normal and imagine the way life might change (on the outside and inside me).

I became more aware of my feelings that got accentuated by what stood outside. When everything was on hold what did not pause at all was my need to give and receive love, my longing for experiences and my desire to live my moments fully , and my chaotic imagination of it all. I felt my feelings closely, deeply – I touched some madness often. Through heart breaks and falling in love, looking back and looking within, I wrote consistently about finding meaning and purpose and growing and finding myself.

I wrote to mark each time I felt strongly .

In The girl and the Time lapse I put together various frames of love, my version and understanding of it and the madness of it from the seasons that rolled during this unforgettable year 2020. These frames were captured when time slowed down and now when played at normal speed as we recover slowly, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing.

Some of these frames may have music as they rhyme, and some don’t. And I call them tales of love and lunacy because each of them is a story of a “feeling” , some more mad than the others. And every verse is free to express herself to the reader like love itself. You are free to interpret it too- you can choose to wallow in the visuals if you like, you could start and stop reading on any page and go back to the book whenever you want.

It is my wish that these tales tug at your heart, evoke something in you that surprises you or they take you to some magical place. I hope they give you joy.

Moods and Moons

A book of poems

They say Everybody has a little bit of the moon in them. Everybody has a little bit of man, woman, and animal in them. Darks and lights and colors and textures in them.

Everyone is connected and a part of the
cosmic system. The earth and sea, wind and fire, some salt some dust swimming in them. We have a universe within ourselves that mimics the universe outside. None of us are just black or white, we are shades of grey and millions of them . We have polarities and forces working with them, against them, and within them. Moods and moons is the way I
experience the moon and me vis a vis the moon. The moon pulls water to it causing tides and in the same way it pulls moods in me that show in creation , rendition , the way I emote and express myself.

Moods and moons has many moons in it –

  • The steadfast moon
  • The strawberry moon
  • The dark moon
  • The blood moon
  • Kuekuatsu
  • The desert moon
  • The dream moon
  • The deceptive moon
  • The new age moon
  • The tiffany moon
  • The (un)familiar moon

Solitary Spaces

A collection of liberated stories

While days sometimes look like other days with routines, these musings are markers – they mark those reflective honest moments that I have with myself. These are random pages from my diary often written when I try to sort something out – some deep longings, pain, corrections, confessions, confrontations, love, or insights…

… I am unsure about my ability to write but grabbing some of these
little unspeakable moments, I decide to write. Naturally – imperfect. I
write because I learn from writing – writing of people, of places, of
journeys and moments. I write about going deep within myself because

I know there is so much further to go to find the truth. And I write –
because I want to include you in this wild adventure. So here is are the astral meanderings of my wandering soul – a little book of my musings. Each page is a liberated story – a narrative that often, partially, or fully, leaves the context to your imagination.

Liberated, as it leaves you free to open any page and begin reading or
stop anywhere you would like to. You could also keep the book
anywhere you want – on a shelf, in your clutch-bag, glove compartment, tablet cover, near the sofa, by the bedside, on a coffee table, in your office space…

Solitary spaces – my little book filled with possibilities.

Being and Becoming

A little book of choices

Behavior is fundamental to our lives – from the time we take our first breath to the time we die we are continuously behaving – but we don’t learn it as a subject in school. So this is stuff they don’t teach us at school and college. All behavioral change is based in thoughts and ideas. Ideas give us new ways of thinking and perspectives. From there
we see possibilities of change and transformation. In this small book,

I’ve put together six ideas that have worked for me and I believe they could work for you.

IDEA # 1 – CHOOSING YOUR RESPONSE
IDEA # 2 – WHAT IS YOUR STORY ?
IDEA # 3 – FORMULA BUSTING
IDEA # 4 – MINIMALISM
IDEA # 5 – MATURE DEFENSES
IDEA # 6 – SELF ACCEPTANCE

I did not come up with all these ideas myself – if you read psychology, art, management, business, and self-help you might just run into some of these principles and concepts yourselves. This little book of choices is my observations and personal experiences, some choices I took, my take on theories and some ways in which I have applied them.

It is my hope that you get something helpful from here.

Traces Faces Lives Spaces

A book of paintings and little poems

The book came together as a collection of poems inspired by the various urban emotions depicted in my paintings of/from Mumbai. Here is an excerpt about the show and the book.
“Cities are described as permanent settlements with complex systems of residence, transportation, structures and societies. And I experience these beings and the things wonderfully seamlessly. Life is about creation and a positive extension of one’s mind, and I love it in all its shades. I like to live in the moment and I quite shamelessly state that I am a rule breaker. I like challenging the status quo – I even challenge my mind with browns and greys which are not really my favorite colors . I paint the urban hustle-bustle of Mumbai regularly. My profession demands a well-structured and a strategic approach, and decisions under uncertainties, and so I try and relate the urban pieces of art with my work. When I start to paint, I have nothing definite in mind. With every stroke, I order out the chaos within me as well. While Mumbaikars may want to run away from the city due to its pace, I am quite in love with the city for its chaos and never-ending continuity. I don’t want to run away from Mumbai and its vibrations. I have been fascinated by owls and cats ever since ,they are very intriguing and mysterious. And owls have a deep profoundness. In Urban emotion, I wanted to bring out my childhood queries through my paintings of domestic cats and owls. I painted with my hands besides the brush, sometimes with nails, blades, and knives as mediums to paint. The mediums and imagery  help me in discovering myself.”

The four-lined poems in Traces Faces Lives Spaces, with their rhythms and rhymes, add to the brush strokes and make them more colorful. These Poems enhance my painting and give them my own interpretation –  though I am happy if both the paintings and poems to evoke different emotions in the viewers and readers. Like they say – Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder,  I am always eager to hear about my work from my audience – often it gives me a completely different perspective. I am a student of/for life!

Indian classical literature lists 116 phases of the moon ,which has been captured by poets and writers since time immemorial.I have read and absorbed all of Mukta’s writings.Moods and Moons reflect what she is -part woman, part child. She blends the wisdom of Sappho and poetry of Gulzar through her musings . Her words have the lure of classical romantic poetry ,yet refreshingly avante garde.

Mukta’s writings are reflective of someone deeply in touch with herself. With her words she conjures up a world that takes you to places familiar but often unvisited by yourself. With her soulful words, she churns up emotions that have laid still for long and some which seek an answer. She paints an intimate canvas with her palette of feelings.
